Chapter 14
After breakfast, both Harry and Rebecca checked out of the hotel and went to the stagecoach office. The stagecoach was ready to be boarded, but it had no driver. Chris Lasher refused to drive because of the Indian threat. He wanted an escort and two men on top with shotguns. The two men were available in the persons of Harry and the very experienced, Herman Windle, commonly referred to as Herk. The two drovers from the Silver Creek Ranch were also available and waiting specifically to escort the coach as far as Laramie.
The stagecoach agent went to the army and requested an escort. Lieutenant Baker was still in town. Harry went with the agent. He remembered that the officer told him that they were supposed to patrol west of Cheyenne looking for the band of Indians. When Harry mentioned it, the Lieutenant said it would be later in the week. He still had to deliver his charge to Camp Belvedere. Harry then suggested that about five of his Calvary personnel accompany them, but only as far as the top of the ridge that was immediately West of Cheyenne. He figured that the danger existed as long as the stagecoach labored up the grade. Once on top, the stagecoach could coast down the other side and out run any Indian that attacked it. The Lieutenant accepted this suggestion since his men would return within four hours, or so.
Harry saw Buster and Jack watching the negotiations. When he asked why they were still there, they replied that they had heard of the Indian threat and decided to wait until they could tag along with the stagecoach as far as Laramie, which is then a short ride to their ranch.
Chris was still adamant, he didnât want to go. So, they called on Charlie Rock. He was still sleeping, having brought the coach from Rawlins Springs the day before, and he was due a few days off. The agent went to his door and begged him to take the coach back.
âOnly if you pay me double!â he yelled.
âOKâ, said the agent.
âIâll see you at ten,â said Charlie.
So thatâs when the stagecoach started out, Ten AM. Charlie was driving, Herk was riding shotgun next to him. Harry was riding as second shotgun on the back, Jack, Buster, and five pony soldiers were riding with them, and sitting alone inside was Rebecca with about four bags full of items she purchased in Denver, and, of course, the mail, the main reason for the stagecoach run. Harry wondered how much stuff Rebecca bought since she had the bulk of it shipped to Willardâs store.
The horses did labor up the steep grade, but no attack occurred. Once at the top, the Cavalry returned to Cheyenne and the stagecoach coasted down the slope with just enough brake to keep the weight of the coach off the animals. It was a clean run to Laramie, but Charlie couldnât go any further that day so they spent the night there.
